Understanding the Tola
The tola (also spelled "tolah") is a traditional South Asian unit of weight equal to 11.6638 grams or 3/8 (0.375) troy ounces. It is the standard unit for gold pricing in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and parts of India. The term derives from the Sanskrit "tula," meaning balance or weight.
International markets quote gold per troy ounce, but gold bazaars and jewelry shops across South Asia have priced gold per tola for centuries. It is the most recognized unit for everyday gold transactions in the region.
The tola became a precise measurement during the British colonial era, when it was standardized as the weight of one silver rupee coin, exactly 11.6638 grams. Before standardization, the tola varied slightly between regions, but the colonial-era definition became universal across the Indian subcontinent.
India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh have officially adopted the metric system, yet the tola remains deeply embedded in gold trading culture. Jewelers, gold dealers, and consumers across South Asia instinctively think in tolas when buying or selling gold, much as Americans think in ounces.
In Pakistan, the tola is the dominant unit for quoting gold prices. Daily gold rate announcements by the Sarafa Bazaar in Karachi and Lahore are given per tola, and this is how most Pakistanis track the gold price. In India, while many urban retailers have shifted to gram-based pricing, the tola remains common in traditional bazaars, particularly in northern states. The UAE and parts of the Gulf also use the tola in markets catering to South Asian expatriate communities.
To calculate the gold price per tola, multiply the current troy ounce spot price by 0.375. One troy ounce contains approximately 2.6667 tolas. Common gold jewelry purchases in South Asia range from 1 to 10 tolas (roughly 11.7 to 116.6 grams), making the tola a practical unit for the region's most popular transaction sizes.
